The magical pill for sexual dysfunction Viagra can work wonders for women also!

It has been reported that the blue diamond magic pill Viagra may actually help women too. The study, conducted by researchers at University of New Mexico School of Medicine, categorically showed that Viagra is effective at combating sexual dysfunction in depressed women.

Sexual dysfunction is a common side effect of antidepressants and a major reason why people stop taking medication for their depression. This is particularly problematic given that twice as many women as men are prescribed antidepressants but the most effective drugs used to combat sexual dysfunction in men are not approved for use in women, the researchers said.

In the clinical trials, the women were told to take a pill one to two hours before sex for eight weeks. Half were given placebos pills which had no pharmacological effects. Some 73 per cent of the women given placebos reported no improvement with treatment while only 28 percent of the women taking Viagra said they did not notice an improvement, the study found.

Viagra is a drug used to treat erectile dysfunction (male impotence) and pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). It was developed and is being marketed by the pharmaceutical company Pfizer. It acts by inhibiting cGMP specific phosphodiesterase type 5, an enzyme that regulates blood flow in the penis. Since becoming available in 1998, sildenafil has been the prime treatment for erectile dysfunction; its primary competitors on the market are tadalafil (Cialis) and vardenafil (Levitra).
