The Indian Meteorological Department has issued an ‘Orange Alert’, which is just below the ‘Red Alert’ in the scale or level of severity of a cyclone in meteorological parlance, for Cyclone ‘Phyan’, which is slated to hit the coast of Mumbai and Gujarat shortly.
According to details coming out of the weather office, cyclonic storm ‘Phyan’ is expected to hit South Gujarat and North Maharashtra by the late evening as a result of a deep depression formed in the South East and adjoining Central Arabian Sea.
Incessant rains and strong winds wailing at about 30-35kmph were experienced this morning in the coastal districts of Bhavnagar, Surat and Valsad with thick, menacing clouds gathering in many parts of the State.
The Met office has put out a warning especially for the fisher folk to not venture out to deep sea along and off Kerala, Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra and Gujarat coasts. With wind speeds going up to 75 kmph, the storm is expected to intensify over the next 48hours.
