lesbian financial advisor Suze Orman opposes Florida’s Amendment 2

Financial advisor and Television Personality Suze Orman has come out openly against The Florida Marriage Amendment, also known as Proposition 2 and The Marriage Protection Amendment. It is a proposed constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage in Florida. The proposed amendment to the Florida Constitution will appear on the November 4, 2008 ballot in Florida. In order to pass, the amendment will require a 60% majority of those voting in the election. As of September 8th, 2008, a slight majority of Floridians support the ballot measure (55%), but not 60%; 41% oppose the measure.

“Many seniors choose not to marry again to keep financial benefits such as pensions from earlier marriages,” Orman said in a release. “Passage of Amendment 2 could threaten these essential resources that help them stay out of poverty.”

She is the host of The Suze Orman Show on CNBC. She has written six consecutive New York Times Best Sellers, has written, co-produced, and hosted six PBS specials based on her books, and is the single most successful fund raiser in the history of public television. Similar programs that she hosts on QVC, the leading home shopping network, also place her as the top seller. In 2004 and 2006, Orman won two daytime Emmy Awards in the category of Outstanding Service Show Host for her PBS specials. Over her television career, she has won more Gracie Awards (5) than anyone in the 33-year history of these awards. In 2008, she was selected by Time magazine as one of the most influential people in the world.

It was in February 2007 that Orman told The New York Times Magazine that she is a lesbian. Her partner of seven years is Kathy Travis, a co-producer on The Suze Orman Show. Kathy Travis has been the inspiration for Suze Orman. It is said that Suze made her career a skyrocket in 1990s when she published the bestsellers The Courage to Be Rich and The 9 Steps to Financial Freedom.

This is sad to hear. I like Suze Orman. Just because someone is an expert in financial matters and well respected it doesn’t mean she’s an expert in family matters.

The family is the fundamental unit of society.

Redefining marriage is going against the wisdom and empirical evidence accumulated over millenia.

All children have an inherent right to have both a mother and a father. Children’s rights need to be given pre-eminence in these matters.

Will the amendment really affect those that cohabitat but don’t marry?
