Kim Burrell: Kim’s takes the stage in honor of Whitney Houston!

The legendary crooner took to the stage last night, in order to pay a musical tribute to a special honoree at the BET awards.

Eminent American gospel singer Kim Burrell, went live on stage at the BET awards 2010, and crooned two of her timeless classics in honor of singing legend Whitney Houston, who was a special honoree at the gala night.

The musical stalwart, clad in a sober black outfit, gave a mellifluous rendition of the timeless classic ‘I Believe in You and Me’.

For the benefit of those who are not yet in tune with the heady career graph of this acclaimed ‘songstress’, who calls herself a ‘jazz gospel singer’, here’s a brief lowdown on the same;

Though Burrell battled double pneumonia for eight years as a child, she performed her first solo with the church choir at the age of only one year old singing Andrae Crouch’s ‘Hallelujah Praise’. She is the daughter of a pastor in the Church of God in Christ. Burrell began her gospel career proper performing with Reverend James Cleveland’s Gospel Music Workshop Choir, Trinity Temple Full Gospel Mass Choir of Dallas and The Inspirational Sounds Mass Choir of Houston.

Her first independent album, Try Me Again, was released on the Texas-based boutique label Pearl Records in 1995. Though limited distribution kept the album from nationwide recognition, it did build a strong reputation that led to her being signed to Tommy Boy Gospel and the now-classic Everlasting Life, produced by Asaph Alexander Ward. The album performed well and peaked at number 12 on the Billboard Gospel Charts.

And need one say that the special musical tribute by the gospel crooner to one of the evergreen singing legends was arguably the biggest take away from the annual BET awards gala.
